About Haiti
Haiti: Haiti is a small country about 700 miles from the Florida coast. Haiti shares about 360 km of border with the Dominican Republic. It is just over 10,000 square miles, or slightly smaller than the state of Maryland. Haiti has about 1,771 km of coastline and a population of over nine million people. Just over 38% of those people are children under the age of 14. The literacy rate in Haiti for those over age 15 is said to be about 53%. The median age in Haiti is age 20.
The Economics of Haiti: If you do any research on Haiti, one of the first things that you will learn is that Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Over 80% of the population live below the poverty line, and over half live in abject poverty. More than 67% of the people are unemployed or have no formal jobs. There is no shortage of unskilled labor in Haiti. The challenge is to equip people with skills to become employed if there is an opportunity.
Sources estimate that the average Haitian income per-person is less than $1 per day. Most experts agree around that $20-$30 per-month is an average income for the Haitian people. To make matters worse, inflation is estimated at about 19%. Two-thirds of all Haitians depend on the country’s agriculture sector to survive. In 2008, four tropical storms severely damaged the infrastructure and the agricultural industry in Haiti.
Weather: Haiti climate is tropical. The average temperature in January is 80 degrees. The average temperature in July is 86 degrees. The rainiest months are April and May. The temperatures drop at night, especially near the coast. If you plan to travel to Haiti, no matter when you go, take a sweater. It can get cool in the evening at any time of year.
